Overlanding in South Africa: Fridges, Compressors and Recovery Kit Checklist

Overlanding has grown fast in South Africa, and whether you're heading out for a weekend or a multi-week trip, the gear you carry matters more than the vehicle badge on the front. Here's a practical checklist broken down by category.

Power and cooling

A 12V fridge/freezer changes what you can bring on a trip — no more soggy cooler boxes or ice runs. The JETX Professional Portable Freezer/Fridge (45L) runs off your vehicle's 12V supply, keeping food and drinks properly cold for the duration of a trip.

Air

Dropping tyre pressure for sand or gravel and airing back up afterwards is routine on any overland route. An onboard air compressor from ALL-TOP takes the guesswork and effort out of it.

Recovery

Straps, kinetic ropes, soft shackles and a recovery ring should be non-negotiable in any overland kit — see our full recovery gear guide for what each piece is actually for.

Lighting

Remote routes mean unlit roads, and a set of AURORA spotlights makes a real difference to visibility and safety once the sun goes down.

Extras worth packing

A reliable Skyfire tactical flashlight earns its place in a door pocket or glovebox, and if you're serious about monitoring your vehicle on long tows or off-road runs, a 12V EGT gauge keeps an eye on exhaust gas temperature so you're not caught out by an overheating engine.
